2008 German DI (Direct Import) Offering From Canal’s Hainesport

When tasting the 2008 vintage, what kept resonating were the lingering, refreshing finishes.  It’s the best Pfalz vintage since 2001 and another strong vintage in the Nahe, with Kruger - Rumpf and Jacob Schneider providing amazing values.  2008 is strong at the Kabinett level, something lacking in previous years.  That, combined with a drop in price from a number of producers, provides an offering loaded with values.

White

2007 Thea Dry Creek Valley Sauvignon Blanc

Thea winery is a Sauvignon specialist in Sonoma’s Dry Creek Valley that makes just this one single-vineyard wine per year.  You’ll find it a little richer than most Sauvignon Blanc with some tropical fruit aroma and flavor without losing the crisp, grapefruit, citrus quality that makes it such a fine summer white.  There were only 1500 cases made.  It’s another great California value from Jonathan Newman.

List Price: $19/Canal’s Everyday Low Price: $12.99/Tasting ONLY Price: $10.99

Red

2006 Porter Creek Pinot Noir Fiona Hills

Porter Creek, located in Sonoma, is a throwback to the early 70’s.  A small, family-run winery (father and son) making terrific, highly rated, Pinot Noir at a fraction of their neighbor’s (Matinelli) price.  I was fortunate to visit with Alex during our CA trip in January and was blown away by the collection.  This Pinot from the Fiona Hills vineyard received a 90 Rating from International Wine Cellars.  “(planted on a steep slope) Bright medium red. Highly expressive aromas of wild strawberry, fresh rose and minerals. Bright red berry flavors stain the palate, picking up a tangy blood orange quality with air. A deeper cherry note appears on the finish, which is taut and impressively focused.

Canal’s Hainesport Everyday Low Price: $34.99/Tasting ONLY Price: $29.99

Rosenblum Cuvee Zinfandel

Zinfandel is the ultimate all-American red wine to celebrate the Fourth.  It’s briary, cassis fruit with black pepper overtones is a terrific companion to meats on the grill.  Rosenblum is one of the famous three R’s (Ravenswood and Ridge being the other two) who pioneered quality Zinfandel in California.

List Price: $13/Canal’s Everyday Low Price: $10.99/Tasting ONLY Price: $9.99

2005 Sur Los des Andes Malbec Reserva

While there are many good Malbecs for under ten bucks, for a few dollars more you can get a world-class bottle of red wine.  Here’s a prime example.  This reserve Malbec is both more complex, yet more supple than their regular Malbec.  Smoky, blackberry aromas and flavors make an enticing package that’s a versatile match with barbequed food.

List Price: $16/Canal’s Everyday Low Price: $14.99/Tasting ONLY Price: $12.99

Riesling

2007 JJ Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett

Perhaps Germany’s most famous winery, JJ Prum had a stellar 2007 vintage.  This received a 93 Rating from the Fine Wine Review and a 92 Wine Spectator Rating.  The Spectator wrote , “ Floral and smoke aromas give way to peach, apple and lime flavors in this delicate, silky Riesling. All is well-integrated with the bright structure and lingers lazily on the long, mineral-tinged finish.”

List Price: $39/Canal’s Hainesport Everyday Low Price: $34.99/Tasting ONLY Price: $29.99
